A tragic incident shook the community of Rosenberg, Texas, on Monday as counselors were called to George Junior High School to support students and staff after a devastating event involving one of their own. Iona Pollard, a 52-year-old cherished instructional coach at the school, was found dead over the weekend, allegedly at the hands of her husband, David Pollard, 47. The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that David is now in custody and has been charged with murder. His bond was set at $300,000 as the investigation into the incident continues.

The Lamar Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) released a statement expressing their profound sorrow over the loss of Iona, describing her as a beloved member of their educational community. Iona was not only a dedicated instructional coach but also a mother to two children who are part of the Lamar CISD family. The district emphasized the heartbreaking nature of the tragedy, extending their deepest condolences to Iona’s children, their families, friends, and everyone who knew her. The statement also highlighted the impact of her loss on her colleagues and students at George Junior High, where she was deeply respected and admired for her contributions to education.

In response to the tragedy, the school district has made counseling and support services available to any students, staff members, or families who may need assistance. The district encouraged the community to come together and support one another during this difficult time. The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office has not yet disclosed a motive for the incident, and a spokesperson revealed that there were no prior calls for service at the Pollards’ residence. This has left many in the community searching for answers and reflecting on the broader issue of domestic violence.

Local advocates and community leaders have used this tragedy as an opportunity to raise awareness about domestic violence and the importance of seeking help. Erica Alvarado, a Lamar CISD parent, expressed her concern, urging women and men alike to be more aware of the signs of domestic violence and to seek assistance when needed. Vita Goodell, CEO of the Fort Bend Women’s Center, emphasized that help is available in various forms, from hotline support to safety planning, and that individuals do not need to take drastic steps like moving into a shelter to receive assistance. Goodell also noted that domestic violence affects people from all walks of life and that it is not limited to any specific demographic.

The Fort Bend Women’s Center has seen a significant increase in the number of survivors seeking help, with a dramatic rise in the number of individuals they assist each year. Last year alone, the agency helped 3,300 survivors, which is 1,000 more than the previous year. Goodell reiterated that domestic violence is an issue that transcends gender, affecting men and women alike, and that it is a problem that can occur in any family, regardless of socioeconomic status. The agency’s hotline, 281-342-HELP, is available to anyone in need, and their website offers a chat feature for those who prefer to seek help discreetly.

As the community grapples with the loss of Iona Pollard, many are reflecting on the complexities of domestic violence and the importance of creating a supportive environment for those affected. David Pollard, who worked in law enforcement for years and served as a safety coordinator for Lamar CISD, is now facing murder charges, leaving the district and the community in shock. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the need for greater awareness and the importance of seeking help when needed. Advocates like Goodell remind us that while the root causes of domestic violence are complex and multifaceted, there is hope for those who reach out for support. For now, the focus remains on supporting Iona’s children, her colleagues, and the broader community as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
