Anti-immigration protesters smashed hotel windows and set bins alight in northern England on Sunday, in the latest wave of unrest testing Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s new government.

Following the shock of the nation over the deaths of three girls last week in a knife attack at a children’s dance class in Southport, northwest England, hundreds of anti-immigration protesters staged fresh protests and clashes with police in towns and cities across the country.

The protests began after rumours spread on social media by far-right influencers about the nationality and religion of the alleged Southport attacker.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside a hotel used to house asylum seekers near Rotherham in northern England. Protesters threw bricks at police and smashed several windows of the hotel, before setting bins alight. Dozens of protesters gathered outside another such hotel in Aldershot, southern England.

Anti-racism counter-protesters were seen in both Rotherham and the north-west city of Lancaster, with police keeping the two groups apart. When protests began in Bolton, near Manchester, police said a dispersal notice had been issued to give officers more powers to stem the chaos. Chief Inspector Natasha Evans of Greater Manchester Police said police would continue to increase their presence to deal with any incidents.

Keir Starmer’s Labour government on Sunday sought to convince Britons of its ability to curb violent demonstrations fuelled by the far right, during the fifth day of the worst riots in 13 years in the country.
